6th May 2000 - Grand Shield
Adjudicators: James Scott, David Read
Test Piece: Variations on the Shining River, Edmund Rubbra
Venue: Victoria Hall, Bolton
This was the band’s first year in the Grand Shield contest, an invitation recognising the band’s tremendous achievements in recent years. The day started early, with the band meeting at the bandroom at 7.00am. A quick trip over the Pennines later, and the band were seated in their practice room, warmed up and waiting for the draw. We drew 10th, which was nicely in the middle of the field of 21 bands.
The band went down to the hall to listen to the first band together (most of them finding time for a detour to McDonalds on the way) and then returned back to the practice room to complete their final rehearsal and get changed for their performance.
The piece was very old, and was first used for the 1958 championships. It had a very small percussion part, which was a change from all the recent huge pieces that we had played, requiring every bit of percussion equipment owned by the band. The piece relied more on the sound of the band, rather than technical expertise.
We felt that they played the piece very well, with just some small slips at the beginning. After playing and loading up the bus, the band invaded a small, quiet pub in the centre of Bolton, to await the final results.
Jo Sherry, in her last contest with the band, went up on stage as the band representative. Our usual rep, Andy Riley, tried to take his normal place, before being shouted and waved off the stage by the band.
The band were encouraged by the comments made by the adjudicators before the results were given out, but were disappointed not to be in the top four as announced. The remarks from the adjudicators showed that they had criticised the band on tuning, and on the interpretation of some of the movements in the piece.
The results were as follows:
