Hey guys!
Just wanted to say good luck for London I cant wait to see you all again! I hope rehearsals are going well, me mum and dad say your playing amazingly well so keep it up!!!!!!
Just thourght I would let you know, all of you that played Paganini in 2006 to win the masters, I will be playing it to my course members and course directors in my Musicality lesson. This is because I was instructed to bring in a piece of music that made me feel something and was connected to a specific moment in my life. I dont know if Iv told anyone this but that performance is the best thing I have ever heard no bias and it makes me literally shiver with excitment and happiness as I listen to it!!!!!!
Good luck for London!
Missin ya loadz!!!!!

Hi,
heard you at the Open and I feel for you. It is always hard when you get an early draw. Just imagine how upset Dyke are after their result.
Anyway I am sure that you will get out of the Shield. Leyland managed it...after 5 years of trying though. But they became stronger as a result. Maybe the result will spur you all on to do better at the RAH. Fingers crossed.

I have just seen the statement about Bob Carrington's passing.
I am deeply saddened and offer my sincere best wishes to his Family.
When I joined Rothwell in 1968, it was Bob who auditioned me, placing me on 2nd cornet, and when we had the extra rehearsals on a sunday prior to contests he was always there to take me to his home so his wife could feed me.I shall retain very fond memories.
To RTB Very best wishes in all you take on this year.

BIG Ben ()

Hi just wanted to say how much i enjoyed the concert at Wakefield Cathedral, i am not a brass bander but i have to say you are the best band since Black Dyke.

Me and my Sheila will certainly come again as she was overwelmed by the experience. She especially enjoyed speaking to the charming young man on the front row with blonde hair (Richard i think?) he is lovely and reminds me of myself when i was a lad, he was especially kind enough to bring us both a drink of orange at half time...Thank you young man, you are a credit to your band and the youth of today.

Kind regards

Ben & Sheila from Wakefield

Hi everyone, good luck in Preston, looking forward to playing another fantastic test piece. What we all need to improve our stamina and techniques is home rared, naturally fed rare breed pork and free range duck. I just so happen to know of a great website that supplies both of these fantastic mouth watering brass improving products! try halespigsandpoultry. com

Melanie and Stewart Kennedy ()

Hi everyone, just want to say a big thank you for letting Stewart and I share the weekend at Cambridge with you all. You made us feel very welcome. Yet another early draw for the band but you still played excellent. We listened to yourselves and quite a few other bands too, including most of the prize-winners and we certainly did not agree with your placing. We know it is difficult off number two draw but we felt your performance warranted you being in the top order – not that 7th at the International Masters is not a good result, we just thought you deserved more. Good Luck for the English Nationals.

Just found out that my grandfathers sister, Lilian Gertrude Ordish was married to John William Dacre, whose father Walter was a founder member of your band. So nice to read its history. Are there any photos circa 1880 to 1890? of members? Interesting site.

Fantastic result ladies and gents, and fully deserved for all the hard work that goes in from Dave and the players. Yesterday was my 6th area with the band and they have now qualified twice and never been out the top seven, all in the strongest area in the world!
Thanks to all of your for having me since 2002.....hopefully I will never be too far from the band and you can be guaranteed of a scream or two from me at the conclusion of your 2008 RAH performance.

Danny Isenring ()

Hi there

My wife Ann Marie and myself were privileged to be at the concert on Saturday, (8 December 07) in Rothwell. What a wonderful evening that was. I knew the band was good, but we never thought it was THAT GOOD!! We have heard the band here and there, especially at events like that Carnival procession, but never at a concert before. So thank you very much for giving us such a great spectacle for our ears and eyes. We really loved the funny bits too - well done! We wish you all a very happy Christmas. Proud to live in Rothwell ...... Danny and Ann Marie.

Like Wendy I have also a family connection. My mother tells me that my great grandfather (I don't know his first name but a Blackburn) was involved in establishing the RTB. I am currently playing trombone with Leeds band Bassa Bassa (www.bassabassa.co.uk), so musical family history has a particular interest to me. Does anybody know how I might find out a little more?

Wendy Kraft (nee Keene) (wendy.kraft@btinternet,com)

Hello to everyone at RYTB,
I an researching family history and have come up with a very strong connection to the RTB. Back to 1881, possibly earlier!
My connection is through the Blackburn family of Rothwell.
Andrew Blackburn was my great grandfather. As I'm sure that you know he had two brothers in the band at that time, Thomas and John.
According to my records they were all members of Rothwell Old Band but fell out over the amount of drink consumed and broke away to form the RTB in 1881.
I am most interested in any history re the band. Is the cenetenary book still in print ?
Kind regards
Wendy Kraft

Despite what Trevor Caffull says in his enlightening response on 4br (and I didnt like the smug tone of his 2nd sentence) Mike Shenton is right to question both Brass in Concert's inclusion in the rankings and the somewhat strange methods they use to invite the bands.
When I was conductor of the old (Wallace Arnold) Rothwell we received an invitation in 1992 on the strength of coming 4th at the Area, qualifying for the open and merely competing in the Masters - never mind winning it!
Also later in the 90s when I was MD at British Steel Teesside and then EYMS, on applying for a place the bands' contest sec was told that there would "Only ever be one band invited from the North East..."

I heard you used to have a truly fantastic horn player and I hear she is missing you
lots. Apparently she says that 'Santaclaustrophobia' is really something
special and should be played at the Christmas concert this year at Blackburn Hall.
Apparently she will be deeply offended if it's not and after a trip to her
psychic it was revealed that if it isn't played she may get a terrible cold and
her nose may possibly fall off. I'm not telling you what to play or anything but
on your heads be it!

Hello,

at this year’s (25.09.2004) „yamaha european open championships“ in Switzerland, your band has played the march who called “the wizard”. I really enjoyed it, as well the other two plays where in my opinion very good, but the jury had an other estimation.
For the future I wish your band all the best and much fun by making music.

Best wishes to you for the coming contest season.
I played in the band back in the mid to late 60s,playing 2nd cornet under the direction of Gordon Roberts, until I left to join the Army. I remember well my first contest with the band, the regionals at Leeds Town Hall, we won and went to the nationals at Hammersmith, London.
It is very satisfying to see the band doing so well.
I remember Bob Carrington on bass, and the Newton bros on troms,The Harts on rep,3rd cornet and euph. and the Newby's. Dont know if any of them are stil around the band, but if they are, I'd be grateful if you would remember me to them and pass on my best wishes.

Do you have any old pictures, (pre-1914) of the band. my grandfather, Israel Blackburn, was bandmaster about that time, and an uncle, Fred, was also in it. I do have one picture, but not very good one.
My father left Rothell about 1926, and moved to Newcastle. I was just doodling around the web, and wondering what he would have thought to be able to look at his old home town - a village it would have been then.

Hi:

An American of English heritage based in Houston Texas. Just moved back to the US from London summer of 2000. Work for Shell and had heard there was a town called Rothwell, but regrettably have not made it up that way yet.

I'm back in the UK on a monthly basis, so maybe will visit one of these times. My four sons and I all play instruments. My oldest son is a Freshman at the University of Texas where he plays trombone in the UT marching band.

Hi there everybody, just checking out the web site and noticed some very "nice" photos. I've been thinking about coming back but I like to wear popstar shoes now, so I dont think I'll fit in anymore?!? Hope you're all practicing hard and maintaining your high concert standards cos' you wouldn't have to maybe start a piece and have to stop and restart at anytime would you, ha ha. Anyway now I've wound David up, I'd best go. Miss you all, catch ya later, luv Linz and family. Yeeeeeeeehhh.

Great webpage and a nice design too. Congrats to the webmaster - I enjoyed reading all about the band and what it's up to at the moment. All the best for future playing.

Great website. Good to be able to catch up with all that's happening especially when I've been away so long - not many left from my day though!!

Keep up the great work

Greetings from the US of A! Last summer, I was on tour with the Illinois Brass Band and had the good fortune to meet Steven Haynes in his capacity of first trombone with the West Yorkshire Police Band. He just gave me the URL for your site and I have enjoyed it.
