23rd November 2006 - Band record Session for Radio 2's Listen To The Band

The band last night recorded music for Radio 2's popular weekly brass band programme, Listen To The Band. At an evening session in Morley Town Hall, the band laid down several pieces which will be featured on the radio in the new year.

22nd November 2006 - Rothwell MD to judge Swiss National Championships

Dave Roberts will be one of the adjudicators of the Swiss National Championships on 24th-26th November in Montreaux. it is the successful Rothwell MD's first major adjudicating role and it seems the Swiss association are going for some new 'young blood' for their nationals. David said "I'm thrilled and honoured to be asked and I'm working hard on the pieces. I'm really looking forward to it."

19th November 2006 - New Signings

The band are pleased to announce two new additions to the band. Jamie McDowell joins on cornet from the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, whilst Jack Telfer takes the second baritone seat vacated by Amy Smith. Jack has a performance diploma from Sedbergh School, one of the best school bands in the country.

31st October 2006 - Tim Hammond Returns

The band is pleased to announce that Tim Hammond has re-signed with them. Tim was until recently the assistant principal cornet at Grimethorpe, and is sure to add more talent and experience to the band's front row cornet bench.

29th October 2006 - Band Stunned by Fourteenth Place at National Finals

The band took their place on stage in the Royal Albert Hall, London on Saturday for the National Finals. After what the band thought was an excellent performance on stage, they were placed a surprising fourteenth out of the twenty bands present. Conductor David Roberts confessed to being "stunned" at this placing, given the good feedback he received from friends and colleagues that heard the performance. David said "I think it's the most surprising result of my career. I spoke to so many top adjudicators and players from other bands and not one of them had us out of the top six, including 4barsrest. To get fourteenth was a shock as the judges have always given us good results. The most important thing for us to remember is that we are playing very well and have had a fabulous year. The future is very bright for us. We will have a few days off and then bounce back." Contest Report

10th September 2006 - Band Placed Fourteenth at British Open

Yesterday the band took part in the prestigious British Open contest in Symphony Hall, Birmingham, competing against the best bands in the world. After success at the Masters and a fifth place here last year, the band were hoping to do well once more, but were placed a disappointing fourteenth. Contest Report.

20th August 2006 - New Faces For The Future

The band have signed two players who have a great attitude and who will hopefully become long term players with us. Greg Nicholas replaces Joanna Hammond on third cornet. After being with the band since the beginning in 1985, Joanna has moved to Cambridge with her husband. Alison Stockdale, who left us last year to give birth to her first child, is replaced by Faye Wilson on second trombone. We know Joanna and Alison will stay big fans of the band and we thanks them for their service to us.

16th August 2006 - Percussionists Return

The band are pleased to welcome Rachel Maguire back to the ranks after a year in Japan. Rachel will play with the band when she can and is to play at the British Open. We are also delighted to welcome back John Turnbull from Hepworth.

29th July 2006 - New Trombone Signing

The band are pleased to announce the signing of David Price to the trombone section. David was previously solo trombone of the National Youth Orchestra. The band are still on the look out for a permanent solo trombone following the departure of Andrew White to study at the Royal College in London.

24th June 2006 - Congratulations to Ed and Kath

The band would like to congratulate Ed Hodkin, our principal Eb bass, on his marriage to Kath Aitken. The service took place in York with the full band playing hymns and entertaining the bride and groom's family and friends.

10th June 2006 - Success at Whit Friday

The band last night took part at the famous Whit Friday marches, competing in nine contests. They were rewarded with five second places and an excellent first at Delph, where they also collected the best euphonium and best cornet prizes. Conductor David Roberts said, "to get five seconds and a first is awesome, but to win Delph is special." The band were also awarded fourth place overall for their performances at the Tameside contests.

28th May 2006 - Band Win International Masters at Cambridge

Rothwell Temperance Band today took part in the Masters contest in Cambridge, playing Paganini Variations by Philip Wilby. In a stunning result, the band were placed first, beating bands from throughout the world including current European Champions Willebroek, Brisbane Excelsior from Australia and Fodens from the north west of England. Our principal euphonium, Andy Marsh, also collected the soloist's prize on the day. Contest Report.

Congratulations must also go to Paul Argyle on the birth of his first child, a week earlier than expected. Harry was born as the band left the stage, and Paul immediately rushed back up north to join his family.

6th May 2006 - Old Boys to Return for Whit Friday

The band at the Whit Friday contests this year will feature some old players returning to the band. Tim Hammond will cover the vacant assistant principal cornet seat, whilst his brother Jonathon will play soprano. Jonathan is covering for Paul Argyle who is due to become a father for the first time around then. Emma Farrow will return to cover principal baritone for Andy Padgett who is best man at a wedding.

4th May 2006 - Band welcome new Front Row Cornet

The band would like to welcome Andrew Wallis to the cornet section. Andrew joins from the Stocksbridge band, and is a friend of our old principal cornet, Tom Hutchinson.

15th April 2006 - Band to Premiere New Work

Band conductor David Roberts has secured a world premiere with one of Yorkshire's finest choirs. A new work for choir and brass band has been commissioned by the performing rights society. More details to follow at a later date.

9th April 2006 - Alison Gives Birth To Baby Girl

The band would like to send our congratulations to Alison Stockdale, our second trombone. Alison gave birth to Isabella on Sunday 9th April, weighing in at 8 pounds 6 ounces.

6th March 2006 - Band Qualify for Royal Albert Hall

Yesterday, the band took part in the Yorkshire Area Contest in St Georges Hall Bradford, and were placed a magnificent 4th behind Grimethorpe, Black Dyke and YBS, beating Brighouse and Rastrick band into 5th place. Grimethorpe and Black Dyke were already qualified for the finals after their top four finish in last year's contest, which means that the new qualifiers from this contest are YBS and Rothwell Temperance. The contest will be held on 28th October in the Royal Albert Hall, London. This is a fabulous result from the band, and builds on our fifth place at the British Open last year. Contest Report.

Conductor David Roberts said "I've had over thirty text messages and loads of phone calls this morning, including congratulations from Dyke and Grimethorpe players who thought we deserved it."

25th February 2006 - Steven Haynes To Play At Masters

Steven Haynes, who grew up playing in the band and is currently studying Trombone in Austria under Ian Bousfield, will return to the band to play at the All England International Masters contest in May. Steven is looking forward to playing with the band once again, and we are pleased to have him, stengthening the section still further.

The band are still on the look out for a quality cornet player for the assistant principal cornet seat.

28th January 2006 - Rich Prentice Returns

Rich Prentice has returned to the band's percussion section after a year out with university commitments. Conductor David Roberts said "It will be good to have Rich back in the section, but the band are still looking to add to this section." The band would like to welcome Rich back.
