8th December 2007 - New Assistant Principal Cornet

The band are delighted to welcome Richard Shaw to the band. Richard has been assistant principal at Sellers for a few years and has quite a few friends in our band. A delighted David Roberts said, "Richard is a great signing for us. We have been wanting a player of his experience for a while and I am very pleased he decided to join. He was very loyal to Sellers and is just the right person to fit in at Rothwell as he's a really nice lad." We hope he enjoys a long and happy future with the band.

21st November 2007 - Band On Radio 2 This Friday

Following a recent recording session, the Rothwell Temperance Band will be the featured band in this Friday's Listen To The Band programme on BBC Radio 2 at 9.30pm. This is contrary to the released schedule in the press which states that the band is Wingates. We have checked with the producers of the show and they have confirmed that we willl be on this week. The broadcast will be available to listen again for the rest of this week.

9th November 2007 - Band Announce New President

Rothwell Temperance Band are happy to announce that Michael Bartlett has taken up position as their new President. Following the loss of sponsorship earlier this year, Michael and his company stepped in to offer support to the band. Andy Riley, the band's manager said "Michael gave us more than financial support, he has also involved himself in the activities of the Band. It is for this reason that we invited him to become President."

Michael is chairman of Barlett Group who are International Insurance Brokers and Independent Financial Advisors, and are based in Leeds.

8th November 2007 - New Players Join The Ranks

The band are pleased to announce the signing of two more players. Vicky Kennedy joins the back row team from the EYMS band. Vicky is a member of the National Youth Brass Band and niece of Nick and Bob Childs. Dean Jones joins on second trombone, after previously being solo trombone for Aldbourne band. He has now moved up to college and brings the trombone section up to four players. We wish them both a happy and entertaining time with the band.

4th October 2007 - Band Recording Music For Radio 2

After excellent feedback from both the producer and listeners of BBC Radio 2's Listen To The Band programme to previous programmes featuring the Rothwell Temperance Band, the band will be recording another programme's worth of music. The recording will take place on 31st October 2007, and the programme will go out some time early next year.

2nd October 2007 - Band To Feature On Bbc 4

The band will be featured on television this Friday, 5th October, in a documentary on BBC4. The programme covers some of the music that has been featured over the past 40 years of Radio 2 and features the band playing the National Anthem at the start of the British Open 2007.

16th September 2007 - Band Placed Ninth At British Open

The band yesterday took part in this year's British Open Brass Band Championships at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham. Off a number one draw, the band gave the premiere performance of Kenneth Downie's Visions Of Gerontius, a new commission for this year's contest. The band were placed ninth overall with the title being taken by Cory ahead of Black Dyke. The band send their best wishes to the winners.

7th September 2007 - Two New Arrivals

The band are pleased to annouce the birth of two new babies. Joanna Hammond, who met her husband Tim through the band, gave birth to Isabelle May on Wednesday this week. This was closely followed by Leanne Cole giving birth to her and Neil's new baby Olivia Mae. The band wish both families the very best for the future.

19th August 2007 - British Bandsman Writeup About Wakefield Cathedral Concert

The band appeared in concert with the Yorkshire Philharmonic Choir in late July and was priveleged to perform a new work for band and choir by Benjamin Oliver. In front of a packed Wakefield Cathedral, the band performed several solo items including Eric Ball's 'High Peak' and Philip Sparke's 'Madrigalum' as well as performing massed items with the choir. 26th July 2007 - Band Football Match A Success

The band yesterday took part in the second ever English Nationals contest, which this year took place in the Guild Hall in Preston. Unfortunately, the band did not find favour with the three men in the box and were placed a slightly perplexing fourteenth, which was second to last. Given that the adjudicators remarks were on the whole very positive, and that the band thought they had put on a good show following a slightly nervy start, this result was somewhat unexpected.

1st July 2007 - New Band History Book Available

A new book about the history of the band has been produced. This 90 page full colour A4 book tells the story of the band's rise from a simple Junior band in the mid 1980's to their success at the All England Masters contest in 2006. 27th June 2007 - White And Giblin Back For English Nationals

The band are pleased to have Andrew White and Dave Giblin playing with them at the forthcoming English Nationals. It is the first time they have played with us since winning the Masters last year. Andrew is now at the Royal College studying trombone. "Gibbo" will add experience to the cornet team. Completing the line up is Richard Wilton on Eb bass who we are delighted has signed on after eight years at Grimethorpe.

5th June 2007 - More Success At Whit Friday

The band managed only eight contests due to congestion but where placed in seven of them, with a win at Broadoak, four third places and two fourths. The band played consistently well all night and although the total is not yet know it is believed to be well over a thousand pounds in prize money.

27th May 2007 - Band Placed Third Defending Their Masters Title

The band today competed at the All England International Masters contest in Cambridge, where they defended the title they took last year. Playing off a number two draw, they were placed an excellent third, once again beating many top bands from around the world.

3rd May 2007 - Old Boys Back For Contests

We are delighted that David Hale, Andy White and John Gillam will be playing with the band at the forthcoming contests. Dai had to miss the area but is back whilst Andy White will play at the English Nationals. John Gillam will help us at the British Open.

2nd May 2007 - Former Top Man Plays At Cambridge

Former Principal Cornet Chris Brunyee will play on the back row at the Masters. Chris has never been far away from the band despite having to leave due to work problems a few years ago. Conductor David Roberts said, "Chris leads by example, his preparation for contests is a model for all our young players to follow. He helped us through the 3rd and 2nd Sections when he was an immense leader for us in my first five years with the band."

6th April 2007 - Craig Gaskell Takes Assistant Principal Seat

In another move set to strengthen the cornet section even further, Craig Gaskell, who played with the band at the Yorkshire Area, has agreed to join the band full time. This is excellent news and completes the band's line up for the forthcoming defence of their title at the All England International Masters competition.

5th April 2007 - Band Welcome New Cornet And Trombone

The band are pleased to announce that they have signed Andy Belcher to the front row cornets. Andy previously played solo cornet with the Black Dyke Band and is sure to add strength to the band's cornet section. Also joining the band is Nick Walker, who joins the trombone section. Nick is a good player with much potential and is sure to go far with the band.

20th March 2007 - James Hartley Leaves

The band are sad to say farewell to James Hartley. James has done a sterling job in the bass section, and leaves due to problems commuting from college in Manchester and college commitments on band nights. James will be remaining signed to the band and we wish him all the best with the future and hope to see him with the band at future concerts.

5th March 2007 - Band Placed Seventh At Yorkshire Area

The band were yesterday placed seventh at the Yorkshire Area Contest. This was a very disappointing result given how well the band is playing at the moment, but the band will bounce back and their next contest will be to defend their title at the International Masters competition.

20th January 2007 - Band Sign Top Trombone For Area Contest

The band are pleased to announce that they have secured the services of Johnny Beattie to play principal trombone at the Yorkshire Area contest. Johnny used to be solo trombone at Grimethorpe and has played with several of the other top bands in the country. The band are still on the look out for a permanent principal trombone, please contact us if you are interested in this position.

7th January 2007 - Band Sign New Cornet Player

The band have signed Craig Gaskell to the cornet bench. Craig was until recently repiano cornet at Brighouse & Rastrick band, and before that he played Principal Cornet with Carlton Main. He played with the band at some of our Christmas concerts and is sure to strengthen the cornet section further in time for the Yorkshire Area.

1st January 2007 - Happy New Year!

The band would like to wish all their supporters a happy new year, and wish them all the best for 2007. The band are looking forward to the challenges of the year ahead, including the Yorkshire Area in March, defending their Masters title in May, a first visit to the English Nationals in June, and then the British Open in September.
